Heatwave : How to make your day a tiny bit better

If you’re living in Europe, you know that these days, it’s been getting quite hot over here. But honestly, the whole world is burning up so if the heatwave didn’t reach you yet : don’t worry, it’s coming. If like me you’re not a summer person to begin with, you might feel like you’re going to die. Or melt.

So how do we survive this ? How do we work/study/write/whatever you need to do through this impossible weather ?

Here’s for you a few tips to get through your day and feel a tiny bit better about it.

#1 – Wake up early. This won’t be easy for everyone (but I mean, with this heat, we’re not sleeping well anyway) but this is the best strategy you can use during a heatwave. Do most of your tasks early in the morning, it will definitely feel better than at 4pm when you feel like you’re suffocating. The more you can do early in the morning when the air is still a tiny bit fresh, the better. Late at night could also be a good option, if by then you’re not already too tired to do anything of course.

#2 – DRINK. Even when there’s no heatwave, it’s important to stay hydrated. Well, during a heatwave, you have to drink even more. Of course, water is a priority and the healthiest drink you can get. If like me you get bored easily, try to add some syrup or some lemons from time to time, whatever suits your taste. Just avoid alcohol because that’s not going to help you stay hydrated, and with the amount you’re going to sweat, and the fact that we’re mainly made of water, my dear, staying hydrated is truly as important as breathing !

#3 – Take breaks to cool off. It can be sitting in front of the fan, eating an ice cream, or taking a shower, but you have to take breaks and find ways to make them as enjoyable and refreshing as possible ! If you work all day without a break, your body is just going to overheat, and this is definitely not what we want. It’s okay if it takes you more time to do what you usually do, as long as you take care of yourself first. Don’t forget that if you don’t, your body will end up giving up on you one way or another as a warning, and we don’t want that either.

#4 – Stay indoors, as much as you can. Stay away from the sun, keep the shutters down/closed during the day, and only open the windows early in the morning and at night. This is not the time to plan trips and busy days if you can avoid it, trust me. If your work allows you to work from home, do it – unless your work place has better conditions than your home. If it feels too hot at home, or if you don’t have anything to keep you cool (like a fan or AC), try to spend some time in a coffeeshop or library where they do have fans and/or AC.

There’s no magic formula to get through these difficult days, but I do hope that you are all taking good care of yourself, please don’t neglect yourself because it can be dangerous.

Good luck to everyone and… “may the odds be ever in your favor” ! 😉

Have a lovely day, and see you next Wednesday !
